Preschool and kindergarten groups, children still learning to read, and anyone playing with pictures instead of words. Nine squares are easy to scan, so nobody gets lost on the card. It also suits a quick review at the end of a lesson, when there are five minutes left and a full 5x5 game would not finish.
How many words you need
Each card needs 9 different words. With exactly 9, every card would hold the same words, only in a different order, and everyone would win at once. Use a list of 12 to 20 so the cards differ: colors, shapes, letters, numbers to 20 or this week's vocabulary all work.
Ways to play
Play one line for the quickest game, or full card for a slightly longer one, which on a 3x3 card is still only nine marks. With little ones, hold up a picture or object instead of calling a word, and let them cover the square with a counter, a sticker or a piece of cereal.
Let children make their own
Hand out the blank 3x3 card and write the word list on the board. Each child copies any nine words into the squares. The copying is practice in itself, and every card ends up different.
