Math bingo

The cards show the answers 1 to 30. You call a problem, students solve it in their heads or on scrap paper and mark the answer. The table below has an addition, a subtraction and a multiplication or division problem for every answer, so you can call one operation or mix them.

How to call math bingo

Read the problem aloud and write it on the board, so students who process better by sight are not left behind. Give a few seconds of quiet before you move on. On the caller sheet, cross off the answer, since that is what is on the cards. An easy way to keep the order random: let the online caller draw the number, then read a problem for that answer from the table. The board on the projector then shows the answers already called, which helps when you check a winner.

Addition bingo and subtraction bingo

For a focused game, call only one column. The addition problems use small numbers, good for first and second grade fact practice. The subtraction column always takes away 2 to 10, so students practice counting back and fact families without big numbers. Once the class is fast, mix the columns in the same round.

Make students show the math

Bingo rewards luck as well as skill. To keep it about math, ask the winner to say the problem behind each marked square. If they cannot, the square does not count and the game goes on. Some teachers have students write the problem small in the square instead of a marker, which gives you a quick record of their work.

Harder and easier versions

For older students, call two-step problems such as 3 x 4 + 5, or a short word problem. To widen the range, change the numbers in the form below, for example 1 to 100 for multiplication and division. For kindergarten, set 1 to 10 and a 3x3 card, which needs only 8 numbers with the free space. When the class knows the facts well, move on to multiplication bingo.

Questions

What grade is this math bingo for?

Answers 1 to 30 with small addends fit first to third grade. Change the number range in the form for older or younger students.

Why do the cards show answers and not problems?

Many problems give the same answer, so marking the answer means the student has to solve the problem first. It also keeps the squares short and easy to read.

Can I use fractions or decimals?

Number cards hold whole numbers only. For fractions, make a word set instead and type answers such as 3/4 or 0.5 as the words; each square can hold up to 40 characters.

How do I check a winner?

Ask for the card number and check it with the winner check, or have the student read back each marked answer and the problem behind it.

Can I call problems in random order?

Yes. Use the online caller or the number generator to draw an answer, then read a problem for it from the table.
