When to choose 4x4
It sits between the tiny 3x3 and the standard 5x5. Early readers manage 16 words comfortably, and a game still finishes inside a short lesson. Adults like it for a party or meeting game where people are also talking and should not have to hunt across 25 squares.
How many words you need
A card holds 16 words. Aim for 20 to 30 on your list so the cards differ enough that wins come one at a time. For a class, a week of vocabulary plus last week's words is usually enough.
Patterns that work on 4x4
Rows, columns and the two diagonals all have four squares. Four corners is a fast warm-up, and a postage stamp (a 2x2 block in a corner) fits well on this size. A blackout of all 16 squares is a good last game.
Filling it in by hand
Write the word list on the board and let each player copy 16 words onto the card in any order. With numbers, give each column its own range, for example 1 to 10, 11 to 20, 21 to 30 and 31 to 40, so calls spread across the card.
