Why 4x4 for little ones
A 5x5 card with 24 words is a lot for a five-year-old to scan. A 4x4 card has 16 squares, so the type is bigger, a line needs only four words, and a game is over before attention runs out. Every word on these cards is one or two syllables. If your group is ready for more, change the size to 5x5 in the form below.
Calling for children who are learning to read
Say the word, then spell it out loud, then hold up the caller sheet or point to it on the board. Children who cannot read yet match the letters; children who can read get the satisfaction of finding it first. In a preschool class, an adult or older child at each table helps. Give a sticker or a stamp for each word found instead of a marker that rolls away.
Turn it into a reading lesson
Before playing, read the word list together and ask children to find the word that starts with S, the one that rhymes with tree, the shortest one. After a round, ask each winner to read their line back. Teachers often pair this set with sight words bingo through December, since both drill quick word recognition.
Everybody wins
With small children, keep playing until every card has a line, and give each child a small prize as they finish: a candy cane, a sticker, a Christmas pencil. Calling for a full card at the end keeps the fast finishers busy marking. The online caller on a classroom screen shows each word in large letters, which helps children who sit at the back.
Questions
What age is kids Christmas bingo for?
Ages 4 to 7, from preschool to first grade. The words are short and common, and the 4x4 card keeps games short. Older children may prefer the main Christmas set on 5x5 cards.
Why is there no free space?
A free space sits in the middle square, and a 4x4 card has no middle square. Switch to 5x5 in the form if you want one.
Can children who cannot read yet play?
Yes. Show each word as you call it, on the caller sheet or the online caller, and let them match the letters. An adult or older child at each table helps a lot.
Can I play on a 5x5 card instead?
Yes. Change the size to 5x5 in the form on this page. The 32 words are enough for 24 squares, though cards will share more words than with a longer list.
How many cards can I print?
The ready PDF has 30 different cards, one class. The form on this page makes up to 500, on Letter or A4.
